Taking A Few Eggs Out Of My Basket

I’m still fighting this damn bronchitis that doesn’t want to seem to go away, but I’m actually starting to see some progress which is a great sign.

Yesterday was the first day of mixed deer season, where you could shoot a buck or a doe given your tag situation. My situation is that I have already used my buck tag, but still have a perfectly unfilled doe tag. Any other year I would have been down the farm 20 minutes before sunrise to go and hunt for a nice doe. But given that I am sick and it was supposed to rain most of the day, I decided pneumonia is worse than bronchitis and that I would wait until next Saturday, the last day of deer season all together.

But that didn’t sit right with me.

I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket. If I go down Saturday and don’t see a doe worth shooting my season is officially over. While the 7 point buck I got on Monday did yield us quite a bit of meat, it would be nice to pack the freezer with 1 more deer for the year. So I formulated a plan. I called my sister today and asked her if she could pick up my daughter at her bus stop on Monday. She said she would be more then happy to. This will allow me to hunt the morning & afternoon after I drop off the kids at school. I was only going to use my sister as an option if I got a late doe and wouldn’t make it back in time, but I think I’m going to ask her to pick her up either way together so that I don’t have to clock watch. I’ll tell me son to go over to her house after school and that way I can be home around the same time as my wife. That should give me about 5-6 hours of hunting time. If I see a nice doe of course I’m going to take her. But if I don’t, I still have Saturday to fill my tag. And if I do end up filling my tag on Monday, I’m still going to go down Saturday and I’ll just chill out and hunt with my camera. Either way, I’ll be out in the woods and having a good time.
