Being A Geek

I was having all kinds of issues playing Diablo III last night. It was rather apparent about 30 minutes into my game that it was my internet connection. The games requires an internet connection to play. About 30 minutes into my game my character was missing everything I was trying to hit, only to have the hhits land magically about 2 seconds after I tried to hit them. I was then promptly kicked off of the battle.net servers. I tried rebooting the game but it crashed twice. When I finally got it working I got kicked again after about 30 minutes once again. This time it was on my end. My computer had gone offline and my router needed to be rebooted. After everything was 100% on my end I logged in again, only to be booted in about 20 minutes this time. I finally threw up my hands and went to bed.

To avoid these issues again, I decided to pick up a 50′ piece of CAT-5 cable at my store tomorrow and to run a hardline to my iMac. Then after dinner I was thinking about how I was going to install it. When I went into the basement to swap out a load of laundry, I scoped out the ceiling down there and determined the best place to come down from the upstairs. After coming up and chilling on the couch for a while, I had an epiphany. Years ago I made a 30′ piece of CAT-5 cable to run from downstairs to my Mac Mini upstairs for doing podcasts when the wifi was acting up. I headed up into the attic and to my cable repository and retrieved it. I headed into the basement to grab the largest drill bit I own and my drill. After a few minutes I had the whole drilled and the cable run into the basement. A few more minutes of snaking it along the basement ceiling and it was now plugged into my router. A quick firmware update and the router and everything is up and running 100%.

It’s nice to be able to come up with a solution and have the materials on hand to make it happen. All in all this project took about 20 minutes. Not too shabby. Now all I need is for Blizzard’s servers to cooperate tonight and we’ll be golden.
