Ok, here's the situation. We get to the site of Smith-Fest a few
hours late because of various obstacles. Once we do get there, we unload
all the computers and equipment from the cars. We get just about
everything setup and we're all set for power. As we plug my machine and
the Smith-Fest server in, POW!!!! Both power supplies blow! WTF!?! It's
already almost 9:00pm and there's no way we can make it to Best Buy in
time. So, we decide that 's ok....we'll just use JP's laptop for the
evening. He pulls the laptop out of his case and BAM!! The battery falls
to the floor. Not a good omen. We get his laptop booted and plug it into
the CAT-5 cable we strung from upstairs that feeds into the cable modem.
Nothing. He decides to go up there and plug the laptop directly into the
cable modem. Half way up the stairs, he laptops reboots itself on it
own. Again, not a good omen. He finally gets upstairs and
nothing...cable modem is dead. So...we decide that nothing else can go
wrong and go to bed. In the morning we wake up and go directly to Best
Buy. We buy 2 new power supplies and rush back to install them. The
computers are now up and running!!! We go to hook up for a dial-up
connector and I forgot the 25' phone line. All we have is a 6 foot patch
cable. Damn! So, JP in all his MacGuyver skills, hacks the phone wire
and splices it with the CAT-5 we have laying everywhere. So that's where
we are now. No broadband, 2 blown power supplies, and time wasted. But,
look at it this way....not much else can go wrong. Can it?!?
